Bollywood Most Expensive movies|10 Most Expensive Bollywood Films

10. Jodhaa Akbar – Ashutosh Gowariker’s gargantuan epic based on Mughal emperor Akbar’s life and his relationship with his Hindu wife Jodhaabai costed about 40 crores. Elaborate sets, huge war scenes and Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai as stars push the budget upwards.

9. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham – Karan Johar’s multi star studded film had Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, SRK, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor. The film was shot in the US and UK, apart from India, and with designer wear and huge sets, it was one of the most expensive movies made during its time. It had a budget of about 42 crores.

8. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna – Karan Johar again, this time minus Kareena, Hrithik, Kajol but including Rani Mukherji, Abhishek Bachchan and Priety Zinta made the whole of his movie in his favourite location, Manhattan, in New York. Thus, the budget was bound to shoot up just like the New York skyscrapers, to about 44 crores. Though the film did not much on the lines of a story, it did have a good music score, always a presence in a Karan Johar movie.

7. Om Shanti Om – Farah Khan’s comical and over-the-top take on Bollywood was a colorful extravaganza filled with technical mastery. With SRK and Deepika in lead roles, the film was famous for its songs (the one with 31 stars from the film industry) and its reincarnation theme. It cost about 45 crores, out of which a large chunk must have surely been allotted to the publicity campaign, which was extensive.

6. Singh is Kinng – Vipul Shah’s comedy flick involving a happy go lucky sardar was shot entirely at foreign locations, with some reverts to India. The hit jodi of Katrina Kaif and Akshay Kumar spelled magic at the box office. Snoop Dogg also sung a song for the film, which costed about 50 crores.

5. Krrish – Rakesh Roshan’s sequel to Koi Mil Gaya was replete with stunts and special effects. The film also involved a lot of foreign shoots and was packaged by special effects people brought in from Hollywood. This Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra starrer cost about 50 crores.

4. The Hero: Love Story of a Spy -This Anil Sharma film had Priyanka Chopra, Preity Zinta, and Sunny Deol was the most expensive film of its time. It did quite a decent amount of business, given the performances and the plot was nothing to brag about. It cost about 55 crores.

3. Kambakht Ishq – Mind-numbing storyline (or the lack of it), below the belt jokes, Hollywood stars with no roles to play but eye candy, and vulgar show of skin characterized this movie. But the shooting was in exotic locales and the start studded cast and the hugely extensive (and forceful) publicity campaign ensured that the budget touched 60 crores.

2. Ghajini – Aamir Khan’s remake of the smash South Indian movie made huge profits for him, raking in about 180 crores in revenue. The movie itself is a really bad remake of the awesomely made Memento. The movie cost about 65 crores, which will surely include the nationwide PR programme, which also involved some bizarre concepts like giving the signature Ghajini haircut outside theaters and the war of words between SRK and Aamir.

1. Love Story 2050 – Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we are at no. 1. Harry Baweja’s launch vehicle for his son Harman, was packed with blue sets, special effects and a robot called QT (who proved to be a better actor than Harman). We saw him dance (Harman that is), we saw him trying to act and we saw Priyanka Chopra in red hair. The film promised to be a sci-fi extravaganza but turned out to be a damp squid. But it cost daddy Harry a whopping 80 crores.

Blue, the most expensive movie in Bollywood heading for an August release

Blue, the most expensive movie in Bollywood heading for an August release

Blue starring Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutt, Katrina Kaif and Zayed Khan, is supposed to be the most expensive movie in Bollywood. With a budget exceeding Rs.100 crores, Blue is heading for an August release. The sensational Australian signer with a pretty face and a knock out butt, Kylie Minogue will be singing for a number in the film. The music of Blue is composed by the best music composer in the world presently,A.R.Rahman. Kylie Minogue will also be playing a small role in Blue.

90 percent of Blue has been shot under water. There are also reports that Blue is inspired from the 1997 Hollywood film, The Deep, directed by Peter Yates. Blue is directed by one-tme ad film maker Anthony D'Souza, who has debuted in the film as a director. What is Blue all about? Well, Blue is about a group of people who are looking for a treasure in the deep sea. They meet with obstacles like sharks while going for the kill.

While shooting for Blue, Akshay Kumar was actually hit by sharp object in the sea and his forehead was bleeding profusely. Since sharks could smell blood from afar, his life was in danger. The lifeguards and scuba divers saved Akshay Kumar in time and brought him to the shore. All the actors in Blue had to learn deep sea diving and jump more than 100 feet deep into the sea.

"I didn't know deep sea diving and had to train for six months before joining the team of Blue," Lara said. "But I got the biggest fright when I was told to jump into the sea without an oxygen mask. Thankfully, everything went well." Katrina Kaif who has reportedly done the costliest item number in Blue has even had her role extended in Blue. She will be paired opposite Zayed Khan.

Blue, the movie with many firsts to its credit, is also the first movie to be shot in Bahamas. Akshay Kumar who had a debacle in Chandni Chowk to China will be looking forward to Blue, apart from other movies like 8x10 Tasveer, Action Replay and Kambakkht Ishq. Akshay Kumar who will be rubbing shoulders with Kylie Minogue in Blue, will be seen acting opposite Hollywood stars like Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richardsand Brandon Routh in Kambakkht Ishq. The only problem with Blue is how the costs will be recovered because it made on a very expensive scale. The producers are finding it difficult to get distributors for the film becasue of the huge cost involved in recessional times.

I Am Game For Bollywood Masala Movies: Sonam Kapoor

MUMBAI: Sonam Kapoor She may have so far done non-glam roles in films that bordered on arthouse cinema, but Sonam Kapoor says she is all game for hardcore Bollywood commercial films. However, there is one condition she has.

Sonam Kapoor is often compared to Deepika Padukone because the two beauties began their Bollywood innings on the same Friday when their respective films Saawariya and Om Shanti Om released. Since then, Deepika has made headway into Bollywood commercial cinema, while Sonam has kept herself to arty films.

In an industry where actors run the risk of getting stereotyped unless they keep doing different roles, Sonam has got an image of a girl who’s interested only in arthouse cinema where she gets to play serious roles. But this, Sonam says, is a misconception.

“It’s a misconception that after films like ‘Saawariya’ and ‘Delhi-6′, I’m only looking at films with serious overtones. All I look for is meat in my role,” Sonam is quoted as saying by a news agency.

Last seen in Rakesh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi 6 , the slim and tall beauty added that she’s all game for doing movies “that are set in commercial parlance”, but she can’t be just arm candy for a hero.

“See, I have never looked down upon hardcore commercial cinema. It’s just that I never wish to be an arm candy who does four songs, a couple of scenes and then vanishes away from screen. Those are not at all the kind of roles that excite me,” she revealed.

Sonam added that even commercial films sometimes have good parts for actresses and she would like to do those kinds of roles.

“Who says Bollywood masala movies do not have good roles for heroines? Look at what Lara Dutta did in No Entry . Now that’s a kind of role that I certainly don’t mind doing,” she gushed.

Another one of Sonam’s favourite is Priyanka Chopra’s role in the gay comedy Dostana .

Sonam is presently slated to act in dad Anil Kapoor’s production Ayesha .

Salman will not be seeing New York

Just like he has not watched any of Katrina’s films

Salman Khan is in no mood to see “New York”, even though girlfriend and lead actress of the film Katrina Kaif is trying desperately to convince him to watch the film.

Katrina’s performance in the movie has been well appreciated and hence she is keen Sallu sees her latest film. But Salman is said to have flatly refused.

According to close sources from Katrina’s end, the actress is hurt by Salman’s policy of ignoring all her films, even though she makes it a point to watch all his movies and even attend his premieres and special screenings.

Salman does watch movies in general but when it comes to watching Katrina’s films he refuses to see them.

If sources close to Salman are to be believed, Salman does not like his girlfriend’s physical proximity with co-stars. He is very possessive about her and can’t see her with someone else, even on screen.

In fact, it’s said that he does not even like Katrina wearing any revealing clothes in real life. And if he sees her wearing something he doesn’t approve of, he asks her to change.

Yash Raj Films denies signing Salman Khan

Says reports are ‘completely baseless’

Bollywood's prestigious banner Yash Raj Films has denied reports that it has signed Salman Khan for a movie, saying they are "completely baseless".

"We would like to clarify that this is a completely baseless and incorrect story. Vijay is still in the process of writing his next script for Yash Raj Films. No casting has therefore been done nor has anyone been considered for the same," stated the banner.

"As and when we do finalise the script and the casting is complete, a suitable announcement will be made," it added.

Shahid goes shirtless in ‘Kaminey’

He went through advanced training for 8 months to build body

Every time an A-list actor builds his body much noise is made about how he got his six and eight packs.

We did not hear much about it, so we were rather surprised to see Shahid Kapur sporting a shirtless look and a chiseled body on a poster of his latest film “Kaminey”.

Shahid is playing a double role in the film, and the body is for the character of Charlie, who needs to look tough, mean and strong.

Apparently, Shahid went through advanced training for almost eight months to get this physique. He trained for two hours a day, five days a week.
According to his trainer Abbas Ali, the focus was on form, speed and power. “For a running shot in ‘Kaminey’ where Shahid had to run shirtless, my aim was to make him look like a sprinter, not an actor," he said.

Shahid is a strict vegetarian, so the diet required to build the physique was a challenge.

“We followed a diet of high carbs, moderate proteins and moderate good fats. We removed maida [flour] from his diet and gave him muesli, oats and protein shakes. He was not allowed any sugar and oil. He had to eat at the right time and in right combinations," said Abbas.

David Dhawan to direct 'Chashme Buddoor' remake?

Having tickled the funny bone of the audience with his comedies, Bollywood director David Dhawan is mulling an offer to direct the remake to 1981 cult hit "Chashme Buddoor".

"I have been approached by Studio 18, who have the rights to the movie. Though nothing has been finalised yet, we are working on it," Dhawan told IANS in an interview.

"Even if I agree to do this project, the movie will have a contemporary feel to it. I have to keep today's audience in mind. I am still thinking about this offer," he added.

One of the best remembered comedies of Hindi cinema, "Chashme Buddoor" was originally directed by multiple-award winning writer-director Sai Paranjpye.

Starring Farooq Shaikh, Deepti Naval, Saeed Jaffrey, Rakesh Bedi and Ravi Baswani, the 145-minute comedy etched itself in people's minds with its witty dialogues and characters.

Asked about his character preferences for the remake, Dhawan laughed off the matter in his trademark style.

The director also revealed that he has been approached to make a remake of veteran filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherji's "Chupke Chupke", which is also "under talks though nothing has been finalised yet".

What was Shahid addicted to as a child?

Mumbai, The one thing that Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor couldn’t resist as a child was playing video games - he was so addicted that he used to spend all his pocket money on them.

“As a kid growing up in Delhi, Shahid used to spend the maximum time inside video game parlours, playing video games incessantly. All his pocket money was spent on playing video games. He used to play till he would run out of money. There were times when he would sit for hours glued to the game,” said a source.

The 28-year-old, who owns PSP and X Box, feels if he starts playing again, he won’t be able to concentrate on his work.

“If I start gaming again I will not be able to read scripts and concentrate on my work. It’s best if I stay away from this old addiction of mine,” said Shahid who will be seen in a completely different avatar in his forthcoming release “Kaminey”.

Ranbir Kapoor loves rains

It is raining all over Mumbai and guess who is madly in love with rains – its Bollywood’s current chocolate boy Ranbir Kapoor.

Ranbir talking about rain says, “I love the rains. I can sit in one spot for hours and just keep staring at the water coming down endlessly. If I am in a happy mood and it rains, I feel happier, but if I am unhappy about something then the rains calm me down. It’s almost as though the rains are a form of therapy for me. I once read a lovely quote by Charlie Chaplin about the rains, ‘I love walking in the rain cause then no one knows I am crying’. That’s what the rains are to me. A strange mixture of joy, melancholy and peace all at the same time! Only thing really is that this city is so grey and beautiful in the rains that it makes me want to work less and just drive around all day.”

So girls now you know how to woo your favorite hero.

Salman avoids New York

While everybody is going ga-ga about New York and John’s girlfriend Bipasha Basu specially flew to Mumbai to watch her boyfriend’s performance in New York, there was no sign of Katrina’s man Salman at the premiere of the flick.

A close friend of Katrina says, “It really puzzles and hurts her why Salman chooses to ignore all her films. It isn’t as if he doesn’t watch any films. He does. But when it comes to Katrina, he seems to suffer from a mental block. He won’t see her films.”

She doesn’t miss any of Salman’s films. Whether it’s a premiere or just a regular screening, Katrina is always there to support anything that Salman does.”

Apparently Salman cannot handle when it when his beautiful girlfriend Katrina romances her co-star onscreen and this is the reason why he stays away from watching her movies.

She will attend music launch of ‘Blue’

Kylie Minogue made much news when she was in India earlier this year to sing and shoot a song in Bollywood film "Blue" and the Australian pop sensation is now set to return in August to promote the movie, says director Tony D'Cruz.

On June 12, she was seen having dinner with the "Blue" director at an Italian restaurant in London called La Estella. The two have apparently become good friends and are in constant touch with each other.

"Yes, Kylie and I did have dinner together. I was on the way back from South Africa after watching an IPL (Indian Premier league) match when I stopped in London to do Kylie's dubbing in 'Blue'. She invited me for dinner at this wonderful, cosy restaurant. Her mother and manager were also there. Kylie is a truly wonderful and genuine person," said Tony.

He also confirmed that the pop star will be back in India in August.

"We're getting her down to Mumbai again for the music release of 'Blue'. After all she has not only acted, she has also sung in 'Blue'. The details are now being worked (out)," he said.

"Blue" is a multi-starrer that has Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Katrina Kaif, Zayed Khan and Lara Dutta in key roles.

Tony's next project has John Abraham and Sonal Chauhan but he says he wouldn't mind working with Kylie once again.

"Where I go from here depends on how 'Blue' performs when it's released in October," the director said.

Vivek becomes Kabab Mein Haddi between Saif-Kareena

No folks, we are not talking about the real life but the reel life. Real life love birds who will be scorching the screen in Karan Johar’s next movie has roped in Vivek Oberoi to play the third important character in the movie.

Kareena and Vivek were last seen together in Omkara.

Now if Vivek plays a baddie or a goodie, is what we have to wait and watch. But i guess its not Vivek who is the haddi, but Kareena who looks similar to a haddi with her zero size figure.

Shahid Kapoor gives up smoking

Handsome hunk Shahid Kapoor who was a teetotaler and non-smoker, had taken up heavy smoking in order to come out of the depression caused by his break up with sexy Kareena Kapoor. Gosh! Shahid you must have realized by now that Kareena doesn’t deserve your love, so why to get into depression. Just dump that girl out of your mind!!!

A close friend of Shahid revealed, “Shahid was a complete teetotaler, but he started smoking on the sets of Kismet Connection in Canada after his break-up with Kareena. He was often stressed out and we didn’t realize what was wrong with him. Suddenly, we saw him smoking heavily during the shoots. We thought it was work-related stress, but we were worried when we saw that he had become a chain smoker.”

Friends bugged him alot and advised him against becoming a chain smoker as it would ruin his health, and thankfully Shahid has realized his folly. As said by the close source, “Shahid realized that a lot had changed in his personal and professional life. Kareena has moved on and so has he. He has accepted things and is happier after Jab We Met was hugely appreciated. He doesn’t need cigarettes anymore!”

Shahid’s personal trainer and close friend Abbas Ali also confirmed the news, “Shahid is training very hard these days. But a few days back there was something amiss; he was not achieving the desired results. When he asked me what was wrong, I told him that his smoking was causing him much harm. Thank goodness, he kicked off the habit and has stuck to it.”

Shahid had taken up smoking on the sets of Kismet Connection and now has given up the habit prior to its release.

Singer Michael Jackson dies on 26th june 2009

Los Angeles, June 26 (IANS) Pop star Michael Jackson has died in Los Angeles, aged 50, BBC reported.

Paramedics were called to the singer's home around midday local time Thursday after he stopped breathing and suffered a suspected cardiac arrest.

He was rushed by ambulance to a local medical centre, but his death was announced shortly afterwards.

The star, who had a history of health problems, had been due to begin a series of comeback concerts in Britain July 13.

Concerns were raised last month when four of the concerts were postponed, but organisers insisted the dates had been moved due to the complexity of staging the show.

A spokeswoman for The Outside Organisation, which was organising the publicity for the shows, said she had no comment at this time.

Uri Gellar, a close friend of the star, told BBC News: "I'm devastated - it's very, very sad.

"I'm still trying to hold on to the glimmer that it's not true. It's too surreal for me to absorb that Michael is no longer with us."

DJ Paul Gambaccini added: "There's no doubt (his) records will be listened to for decades to come.

"There will be millions of people in the world who will have extreme emotional reactions."

US media reports said paramedics were called to the singer's house in Bel Air at midday.

They performed CPR on Jackson and rushed him to the UCLA medical centre.

Crowds have begun to gather outside the facility, whose emergency centre has been roped off by police.

Jackson began his career as a child in family group The Jackson 5.

He then went on to achieve global fame as a solo artist with smash hits such as "Billie Jean" and "Bad".

"Thriller", released in 1982, is the biggest-selling album of all time, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

But the singer had been dogged by controversy and money trouble in recent years, becoming a virtual recluse.

He was arrested in 2003 on charges of molesting a 14-year-old boy, but was found not guilty following a five-month trial.

The star has three children, Michael Joseph Jackson Jr, Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince Michael Jackson II.

He is survived by his mother, Katherine, father, Joseph and eight siblings - including Janet, Randy, Jermaine and La Toya Jackson.

According to Sangeeta, the victim was in love with Shiney Ahuja and added that the boyfriend of the victim had left her and went to his village and got married and now she felt for Shiney. Sangeeta’s speaking in favor of Shiney has added some strength to the case. The other maid said that she knows Shiney for a long time and strongly believes that he cannot do such a nasty act.

However, Shiney Ahuja has been sent to judicial custody till July 2. His wife Anupam Ahuja who is leaving no stone unturned to rescue her husband went to meet him in jail on Thursday and said that both looked at each other with love and it was a wonderful feeling. She added that they really love each other and waiting for him to come home.

Shiney was arrested on Sunday evening for allegedly raping her maid servant and during interrogation at the police station; he confessed that he had consensual sex with the maid.

No tension between Priyanka and Ashutosh

In spite of the fact that Ashutosh Gowariker humiliated Priyanka Chopra at the IIFA by comparing her with Aishwarya Bachchan, Priyanka did not take it to her heart. Initially, she was little upset with Ashu’s comment but later sorted out the differences.

According to a source close to the actor, "Priyanka and Ashu are very fond of each other and there is no tension between them." Ashutosh may pass an unfruitful comment to Priyanka but he has given her the rare scope of grooving to 12 songs in ‘What’s Your Rashee?’ as a tribute to the 12 sun signs.

The songs is not meant to mend the differences between them but was preplanned. "Ashutosh is not doing anything out of the way. It's a plan that they always had," the source says.

When contacted Priyanka says, "There are 12 characters belonging to different zodiac signs, so the 12 songs. It's amazing how Sohail Sen (the music composer) has brought all of them together with a range and mixture of distinctive sounds. Each song is unique and depicts each character's story."

Ness asks Preity to give up acting

During the IPL, Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia’s split-up came as a shock for all. The duo then preferred to keep mum as why they broke-up but now the news is out that both parted away due to Preity’s filmy career. Ness Wadia wanted Preity to bid goodbye to acting after marriage but Preity was adamant to carry on with her filmy career. They had a big argument over the issue and finally ended up with the split-up.

In fact, Ness and Preity had decided to tie the knot by the end of the year and the final bomb blast when Ness put forward his proposal at the last minute. Preity is an independent person and she wanted to lead life according to her own set of rules. She does not want to get into any new relationship at the expense of her career. At first she thought Ness was joking but when she realized that he is serious; she was shocked and decided to give up her relationship instead of career.

Preity thinks that a relationship based on condition would not last long and it would be better to dump her long standing relationship with Ness Wadia before any further advancement. Though Preity has a few films in hand, she had a very promising career and wished to continue with it.

Sallu entertaines Neil on Dus Ka Dum kat-sallu

The next celebrity star on Dus Ka Dum is Neil Nitin Mukesh, and inspite upsetting Salman recently by referring Katrina as sweetheart there was no hint of sourness visible between the two actors.

A source from the sets says, “Salman also announced that they are friends from now on. They laughed, chatted and enjoyed the whole episode with Katrina also. Sallu also had sung a romantic song for his sweetheart.”

Sallu asked Neil that if they really shot New York in New York and Neil replied,“Yashraj is a big banner and they shoot wherever it is required to and spare no costs.”

To which Salman replied,““Lucky you, we shot for London Dreams in Punjab!”

The source adds,“It was very surprising to see Katrina Kaif in a salwaar-suit, she was looking very pretty. She came down with Neil Nitin Mukesh to promote their new film New York. There is no doubt that Neil is a dude and has a great sense of humor. But this episode wasn’t as good as the previous episodes of Dus Ka Dum but still people will enjoy it. Katrina won the knock- out round and played further, she won Rs. 1, 00,000.”

Salman made Neil sing some songs and do some mimicry, “Neil was great while speaking in the voice of the late Sanjeev Kumar and Mithun Chakraborty. He also mimicked SRK,”says the source.

Censor Board refused to give even an ‘A’ certificate due to Breast squeeze dialogue

Censor Board shocked due to a scene in which the film’s hero is told to squeeze the heroine’s breasts.

Filmmaker Manish Gupta, known for his realistic approach in films ‘Matrabhoomi’ and ‘The Stoneman Murders’, has gone a bit too far in depicting realism in his next film Hostel . The film revolves around a bunch of students living in a hostel.

There is a scene in the film juniors are ragged by their seniors. The characters are played by Vatsal Seth and Tulip Joshi In this scene, one senior tells Vatsal to squeeze Tulip’s breasts.

The senior’s dialogue goes something like this: “Iski chhati dabaa. Private mein to dabata hai. Ab bhi dabaa. Nahin toh hum dabayenge.”

The Censor Board was so shocked by the dialogue that they refused to give even an ‘A’ certificate to the film. The director was directly told that such kind of dialogue would not be allowed in films.

Due to the strong board’s reaction against that scene, Manish Gupta has now decided to change the scene. Now, the seniors will force Vatsal to kiss Tulip.

Despite the change, Manish maintains that such kind of vulgar ragging does take place in colleges.

Abhay Deol returns to India for 'Ayesha'

He’s not bothered that it is an out-and-out Sonam Kapoor film

He has been missing from the scene ever since his revisionist interpretation of "Devdas" in "Dev D" had his fans in a thrall. But Abhay Deol is now returning to Mumbai from New York for his new film "Ayesha" and to float his own production house.

"I'm coming back in (late) June so there will be at least two weeks to prepare. I'm also starting my own production company and have written the next treatment for my script. So my hands are full," Abhay told IANS on the telephone from New York.

"I don't feel like a New Yorker. But I'm definitely enjoying my stay," he added.

Abhay has so far played only central characters in Imtiaz Ali's "Socha Na Tha" and Anurag Kashyap's "Dev D", but in "Ayesha" Sonam Kapoor is getting all the attention.

Abhay has been signed on to play the male lead, but the complete focus of the pre-production activities has been on Sonam. Doting father that he is, Anil Kapoor is sparing no expenses to make sure Sonam gets the most lavish home production possible.

According to a source close to the project, Sonam has selected everything from the theme - Jane Austen's "Emma" - to all the clothes, which are being done by Hollywood's chic designer Mona May.

"The three male protagonists, Abhay, Cyrus Shahukar and newcomer Arunoday Singh, are incidental. In fact, their collective remuneration for the film would be less than what Sonam's elaborate gowns and dresses would cost," said the source.

So where does that leave Abhay?

"Every film does not have to be from the viewpoint of my character. In fact, I'm excited about this film. I'll have a less hectic schedule than Sonam and it will be refreshing to see someone else on the set more often than me," said Abhay.

Doesn't it bother Abhay that "Ayesha" is an out-and-out Sonam vehicle?

"If you say it's a Sonam vehicle, it's natural considering the story's a romantic comedy from the point of view of a girl and I'm playing the male lead. My role is the Mr. Knightley character from the novel 'Emma'. All those who have read the book will know exactly what kind of role it is and how well-defined it is," he said.

Abhay's look, he says, "will be on the peppy side. Rich, well-groomed and urban."

John Abraham studied Quran for 'New York' role

Mumbai, June 18 (IANS) Not knowing a single word of the Quran, Bollywood hero John Abraham, a Parsi, studied the holy book in a translation to prepare himself to play an NRI Muslim in Kabir Khan's "New York".

"It's part of my larger determination to prepare myself completely for a part. Whether it was 'New York' or now Abbas Tyrewala's film, I'm taking time off to prepare for the film and the character. The audience today understands an honest film. That's what I want to give," Abraham told IANS.

Earlier John learnt to play the flute, the Sanskrit language and how to wear a dhoti to give his character, Narayan, conviction in Oscar-nominated "Water", a film about the plight of widows in pre-Independence India.

"I only want to do roles that take me out of my comfort zone. Through my characters and performances, I want to make people comfortable with what makes me uncomfortable as a human being and an Indian," said Abraham, who believes that an actor has to break through his own stereotypes.

He tried to break his image by doing films like "Water", "No Smoking" and "Kabul Express".

Says one of Abraham's close friends of "New York": "He went very deep into the film's theme of Islamic isolation. When he shot 'Kabul Express' with Kabir Khan in Afghanistan, John spoke to people....and began to understand the concept of jehad. He understood how dangerous it is to fight for a cause without knowing the history of that cause.

"He went on the net, found legitimate and proper translations of the Quran. He learnt the proper pronunciations of words in the Quran", the friend said.

In "New York", Abraham plays a character who is wrongly detained in the US for terrorism.

"John researched rigorously on Islam and its various aspects. His character in 'New York' is wrongly detained for terrorism. John based his character on three such real-life Muslims taken into custody in the US for wrongs they hadn't committed.

"John and Kabir Khan amalgamated the cases of three such unfortunate people to create John's character. He actually lived, breathed, slept and wept like someone who had been wrongly ostracised," said the friend.

So traumatised was the actor by the experience that he went into a complete shell in Philadelphia, where "New York" was shot.

"He wouldn't talk to people. He was completely in his own shell. It was a life-changing experience. Today, John knows what it feels to be a Muslim and a target of ceaseless suspicion and hostility in the US.

"He also empathises closely with the issue of Indian students being racially abused in Australia after playing an Indian abused in 'New York'. He understands the isolation of the minority. To a large extent, John has been a part of a minority from his birth," said the friend.

Releasing June 26, the film also stars Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan.

Reasons why this year's IIFA Awards at Macau were a roaring success

It's the mother of all events and this year's IIFA at Macau, China lived up to its reputation of being the best in the business.

Come to think of it, handling so many stars and celebrities [and their elephantine egos] is next to impossible. But I'd salute Andre Timmins, Sabbas Joseph and Viraf Sarkari along with the Wizcraft team for pulling off a spectacular event without a glitch.

Let me begin with what made IIFA 2009 a success. The showcasing of three films [JAIL, DO KNOT DISTURB and SHORTKUT] gave one ample opportunity to learn about these films. The star attendance was excellent, with the names associated with the movies being present on the dais for a tête-à-tête.

The fashion show was equally spectacular, but long drawn. The designers who stole the limelight were Manav Gangwani and Anamika Khanna, with their dazzling creations.

The ZAIA show was a visual treat. For a change, the Bollywood brigade didn't talk about themselves [most of them have this I-me-myself habit], but the aerial acrobats. This once-in-a-lifetime experience is sure to stay in your memory for a long, long time.

But the big night - the awards event - was truly the jewel in the crown. At first, the goings-in seemed predictable. But it gathered momentum gradually.

The antakshari by the stars was a brilliant idea. Shabana Azmi rendered 'Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan', Sonam sang 'Na Na Karte Pyaar Tumhi Se Kar Baithe', Hrithik Roshan crooned 'Tere Jaisa Yaar Kahan', Zayed Khan hummed the title track of MAIN HOON NA, Bipasha Basu sang 'Thande Thande Paani Se Nahana Chahiye' and last but not the least, Big B rendered a line of 'Mere Paas Aao Mere Dosto Ek Kissa Suno' and also a couplet from KABHI KABHIE. This antakshari deserved brownie points.

Among star acts, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's act was superb, but the one who stole the show was Abhishek Bachchan, who danced on a medley of hits. He danced like never before and had the crowd screaming for more. 10 on 10, Abhishek.

Boman's take off on Anil Kapoor and Boman and Ritesh's spoof on the Best Films of the Year brought the house down. It had everyone in splits.

As someone who has attended almost all IIFA events, I'd say that this year's event was amongst the best the decade has witnessed. In terms of hospitality, The Venetian was spectacular, while the arrangements and co-ordination were impeccable.

David, Govinda reunite for another laugh riot!

Mumbai, June 17 (IANS) "Do Knot Disturb" by David Dhawan has a lot going for it as far as reunions go. Not only does it carry forward his partnership with favourite actor Govinda, but it also marks the director's coming together with producer Vashu Bhagnani after four years.

"Vashu, Govinda and I have been a team for years now. Our motive has always been to entertain people. And what better way to do that than to make them laugh. Our track record over the years pretty much demonstrates that," Dhawan, who is collaborating with Bhagnani four years after the release of "Shaadi No. 1", told IANS.

"'Do Knot Disturb' follows the same objective -- to make people laugh and let them forget their worries. With actors like Govinda, Riteish Deshmukh, Lara Dutta and Sushmita Sen - all of whom have a natural flair for comedy - I am sure audiences worldwide would be seen smiling once the film arrives on screen," he added.

Said Bhagnani: "Add to this the very fact that 'Do Knot Disturb' would be my sixth film with David. In fact, my first four films as a producer were all with David - 'Coolie No. 1', 'Hero No. 1', 'Bade Miyan Chote Miyan' and 'Biwi No. 1'. All four were massive hits and incidentally the first three were with Govinda."

Apparently, "Do Knot Disturb" marks Dhawan and Govinda's 17th film together. Apart from that, Govinda reunites with Bhagnani 11 years after "Bade Miyan Chote Miyan" (1998).

Subsequently, Bhagnani and Dhawan took a break from each other and worked with other filmmakers. They joined hands once again for "Shaadi No. 1", but the film just about managed to sail through.

"We have been like brothers and it has been a great journey since 1995, the year when 'Coolie No. 1' released. It was about time that the three of us came together again and this is what resulted in 'Do Knot Disturb'," sais Bhagnani.

"Do Knot Disturb" is being touted as an out and out fun entertainer that also stars Sohail Khan, Ranvir Shorey and Rajpal Yadav. With music by Nadeem-Shravan, the film would be released later this year.
